How to Keep an Indoor Cat Entertained
An indoor cat is not bored because it lacks toys. It is bored because nothing in the apartment changes. A cat that lives indoors needs three things every day: something to chase, something to climb or hide in, and something to watch. Everything else is decoration.
This guide is the routine that covers all three, and it takes about ten minutes of your time.
The three kinds of play a cat needs
Chase and catch. Chasing is hunting. A cat that never gets to finish a hunt stays restless. The toy has to be caught sometimes, or the cat learns that the game never ends and stops playing.
Hide and watch. A cat needs a place where it is hidden but still sees the room. That is what a tunnel, a cave or a box actually is.
Watch and think. A window with movement outside is television for a cat. A cat without a window gets its stimulation from your ankles.
Most cats that "have behavior problems" are missing one of the three, not all three.
A ten-minute daily routine that works
Two minutes of chase before the cat's meal. Use a wand toy, move it like prey: stop, twitch, run, hide behind a chair leg.
Let the cat catch it once or twice. Finish the hunt, then feed. Hunt, catch, eat, sleep is the natural order, and a cat that follows it settles down.
Three minutes of the automatic toy while you put your things away. This is where an automatic toy earns its place: it keeps the game going while you are doing something else.
Five minutes of quiet: the tunnel, the cave, the window. The cat does the rest.
Do this at the same time every day. Cats are routine animals, and a cat that knows when play starts stops asking for it at 4 a.m.
Rotate toys instead of buying more
Cats get bored of a toy that is always on the floor, and they get excited about the same toy three weeks later. So keep a box, put half the toys inside it, and swap the contents every week. The rotation is the enrichment. This is also why a toy that can be put away and brought back out is worth more than a bigger toy that stays out.
One rule: put away anything with feathers, strings or small parts when you are not watching. A cat that eats fabric or string is a veterinary emergency waiting to happen.
Build a window and hiding circuit
A window with something to watch outside. A bird feeder outside the glass doubles the value.
A high place to sit, because height is safety for a cat. A shelf cleared for the cat works better than a purchased tower in a small room.
A hiding place at floor level: a tunnel or a cave.
A route between them. Cats like a path they can run at full speed, and a tunnel on that path gets used every night.
Tools that do the work when you are not home
These are the products that hold up to daily use and, more importantly, do not need a human to operate them. Price is from the product page on October 30, 2026.
OrbitPlay Automatic Feather Cat Toy

A UFO-shaped toy with feathers that pop out at random and colored lights in the dome. Several play modes and speeds, rests automatically at night, recharges by USB. This is the one that survives being left on while you are at work.
What's in the box: 1 automatic cat toy, 5 spare feathers, 1 USB cable.
PounceBot Interactive Cat Toy

An automatic teaser that moves in unpredictable patterns, with adjustable speed and quiet operation. The unpredictability is what keeps a cat playing; a toy that repeats the same path gets ignored in a week.
What's in the box: 1 automatic teaser toy with rechargeable battery and charging cable.
FlutterPal Flapping Bird Cat Toy

A plush bird that flaps its wings like a bird moving on the floor, about 6.7 in (17 cm), USB rechargeable. Best for the cat that carries things around. At the time of writing only the owl style is in stock.
What's in the box: 1 flapping bird toy in the style you choose.
CozyBurrow Suede Cat Tunnel

A 47 in (120 cm) S-shaped tunnel with a peek hole and a pom-pom at the entrance. Folds flat. This is the hiding place and the running route in one object, and it is the piece most indoor cats use every single day.
$69.97 â see the CozyBurrow Suede Cat Tunnel in the shop.
What's in the box: 1 cat tunnel, in the color you choose.
Felt Egg Cat Cave

A thick felt cave, about 13 x 7.9 x 10.2 in (33 x 20 x 26 cm), with a wide half-closed opening. Comes apart for washing. The cave is for the cat that wants to be hidden but still in the room with you.
$69.97 â see the Felt Egg Cat Cave in the shop.
What's in the box: 1 felt cat cave, in grey, pink or blue.
NestPod Cat Bed and Sleeping Bag

A round bed, about 21.7 x 23.6 in (55 x 60 cm), with a pocket in the middle: flat bed on top, sleeping bag inside. Cotton, linen and polyester. End the routine with this one, after the hunt and the meal.
What's in the box: 1 cat bed, in green or yellow blue.
PawCam Clip-On Pet Camera

A mini camera that clips on to record what the cat does during the day, with a 32 GB card included. Most people buy it for the funny videos. It is also how you find out whether the cat uses the tunnel at all, which tells you what to buy next.
$109.97 â see the PawCam Clip-On Pet Camera in the shop.
What's in the box: 1 mini camera, 1 memory card (32 GB), 1 data and charging cable, 1 OTG card reader adapter, 1 silicone cover, 1 back clip, 1 screw base.
What to avoid
Laser pointers as the only game. The cat never catches anything, and some cats become obsessive. If you use one, finish with a physical toy the cat can catch.
Leaving string, ribbon or feathers out unattended. Linear foreign bodies are a surgical problem.
Punishment for night activity. A cat that is awake at 3 a.m. is a cat that slept all day. Move the play session, not the cat.
Toys that are too big to grab. A cat wants prey-sized, not toddler-sized.
Questions about indoor cats
How much play does an indoor cat need?
Two or three short sessions a day of five to ten minutes each is the usual recommendation. Short and frequent beats one long session.
My cat ignores every toy. What now?
Change the movement, not the toy. Most cats respond to a wand toy that hides, stops and twitches like prey. If that fails, rotate the toys and try again in a week.
Do automatic toys replace play with me?
No. They fill the hours when you are not home. The hunt with you is still the main event, and the meal should follow it.
Is a tunnel or a bed better for an anxious cat?
A tunnel, because it has two openings. A cat that feels trapped will not use a cave, but it will use a tunnel it can escape from.
